Potter is one of the oldest communities in western Nebraska. It is located on U.S. Highway 30 and Interstate 80, 16 miles west of Sidney. It was named after General Joseph S. Potter, Union Pacific Railroad Director. Union Pacific built a station house at Potter in 1870 which also served as a post office, school house and land development office. Potter was incorporated as a village in 1912. An airport was established in 1946. A K-12 school system exists as part of a consolidation between Potter and Dix. Dix is located in nearby Kimball County.
